U.S. Customs and Border Protection (Customs) is a federal law enforcement agency of the United States Department of Homeland Security charged with regulating and facilitating international trade, collecting import duties, and enforcing U.S. regulations, including trade, customs, and immigration. Customs is the largest law enforcement agency in the United States and is stationed at U.S. seaports, airports, and other border crossings throughout the country to examine, detain, and seize goods entering or exiting the country.

When Customs decides to detain a particular shipment, officials thoroughly sort through and examine the contents of the shipment. If Customs find a violation, the goods are seized and transferred to an official warehouse for storage until further a determination is made. If Customs decides to seize the goods, the alleged violator is generally given three options: 1) abandon the goods; 2) file a petition with Customs for reconsideration; or 3) take the matter directly to court.

At this stage, the next decision the importer makes regarding the seizure is critical in determining whether the goods will be returned or forfeited permanently. Wang IP Law Group, P.C. offers advice and representation to clients with issues of detention and seizure before U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Our firm represents clients before  international trade and customs regulatory agencies in administrative proceedings and before state and federal courts in prosecution proceedings.
